Applicants Can Now See Personalized Processing Times for PR & Citizenship Under IRCC’s Updated Tool

At Foothills Immigration, we’re integrating this tool into our client processes—helping you monitor progress, interpret estimates, and stay informed every step of the way.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has rolled out a significant update to its online processing times tool — a change that brings much-needed transparency to permanent residence and citizenship applicants.

Previously, applicants could only view average processing times by program (for example, Express Entry, PNP, or citizenship). The new functionality now allows individuals to input their actual application date and see where their file sits in the queue.

Previously, IRCC’s “Check Processing Times” tool provided average processing times by program (e.g. “Express Entry: 6 months”). The downside was obvious: those averages didn’t account for when your application was submitted, how many applications are ahead of you, or how the queue has shifted since.

With the new tool, applicants for certain PR and citizenship streams can now:

- Enter their application submission date

- View an estimated remaining wait time

- See how many files are ahead of theirs

- Compare that estimate to what a new applicant would currently expect

If someone has not yet applied, the tool will show the current average processing time and total backlog for that program.

This feature currently covers several economic immigration streams and citizenship applications. Some other categories—such as family sponsorship, refugee-based processes, or document amendments—are not yet included.

What This Update Means for You

This new IRCC tool is more than just a helpful feature — it’s a real step forward in giving applicants like you more control and clarity over your immigration journey.

More Confidence and Clarity

You’ll now see an estimate that’s specific to your own application, instead of a general “6-month average.” This gives you a clearer sense of where things stand and helps take away some of the uncertainty and anxiety that often come with waiting.

Better Communication and Transparency

We can now use this tool to help you understand your processing timeline in real time. It allows us to answer questions more precisely, set realistic expectations, and monitor changes to your file’s position in the queue.

Early Signs of Delays or Issues

If your estimated timeline suddenly changes or looks unusual, it could be a sign that something needs our attention. We’ll keep an eye on it and step in if follow-up with IRCC is needed.

A Smarter, More Proactive Approach

By using IRCC’s latest tools, we’re making sure you always get the most accurate information available. Our goal is to keep you informed, confident, and supported every step of the way.

How to Use the New Personalized Processing Time Tool

Here’s how you can check your own estimated processing time:

Check if your program is included

The new personalized estimates are currently available for certain permanent residence and citizenship programs. We’ll confirm whether your stream is eligible.

Enter your application date

If you’ve already applied, you can enter the date you submitted your application. The system will show your estimated remaining wait time, how many people are ahead of you, and what the average looks like for new applicants.

We’ll include updates in your file reviews

We’ll use this new information when reviewing your case so you always know what to expect and where your file stands.

Keep an eye on changes

Processing times can shift — sometimes due to backlogs or program adjustments. If we notice a big change in your estimate, we’ll help you understand what it means and whether action is needed.

Remember: it’s an estimate, not a guarantee

These timelines are helpful guides, but they’re still projections. Processing times can vary based on IRCC workload, staffing, or policy updates.

Our Commitment to You

At Foothills Immigration, we’ll continue to monitor updates like this so you don’t have to.

Our role is to interpret these tools, guide you through any changes, and ensure you always have the clearest picture of your path to approval.

The launch of IRCC’s personalized processing time feature marks a welcome move toward increased transparency in Canada’s immigration system.

We continuously monitor these system improvements to ensure our clients remain informed, confident, and fully supported at every stage of their immigration process.
